Hindu-Buddhist Decline, Muslim-Christian Growth: Latest Census Report on Nepal’s Religious Population

Nepal’s Hindu and Buddhist populations have declined slightly over the past ten years, while the Muslim-Christian population has increased slightly, according to the country’s latest census report.

Hinduism is still the dominant religion in Nepal, accounting for 81.19 percent of the total population, according to the Census 2021 report published by the Central Bureau of Statistics on Saturday. 2,36,77,744 people follow Hinduism. Buddhism is the second most followed religion in the country. There are 23,94,549 Buddhists in the country. That means the number of Buddhists is 8.2 percent of the total population of Nepal. The number of Muslims is 14,83,060. That is 5.09 percent of the total population. That means Islam is the third most followed religion in the country.

The census report indicates that the population of Hindus and Buddhists has decreased slightly while the population of Muslims, Christians and Kirats has increased slightly over the last ten years. In the last 10 years, followers of Hinduism and Buddhism have declined by 0.11 percent and 0.79 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, according to the figures, the population of Islam, Kirat and Christian groups increased by 0.69, 0.17 and 0.36 percent respectively.

As of the 2011 census, Nepal had 81.3 percent Hindus, 9 percent Buddhists, 4.4 percent Muslims, 3.1 percent Kirats, and 0.1 percent Christians. Christianity, the fifth largest religion in the country, has 5,12,313 people or 1.76 percent of the total population. Meanwhile, the indigenous Kirat religion is the fourth largest religion with only 3.17 percent.

Population census is conducted in Nepal every ten years. But this time due to covid-19 the release of census data was delayed. Among the ten religions practiced by the people of Nepal, there are five minor religions including Prakriti, Bon, Jain, Bahai and Sikh.

Nepalis have a total of 124 mother tongues. 44 percent of them speak Nepali. Maithali speakers are 11.05 percent and Bhojpuri speakers are 6.24 percent. Similarly “Taru language” is spoken by 5.88 percent of the population while “Tamang language” is spoken by 4.88 percent.
