“Holes” in the sun: should we be worried?

2023-12-13 22:47:40

This phenomenon is actually a coronal hole and occurs when the temperature cools at a location on the sun.

“This is because the light produced no longer has the same color. Instead of being yellow, it turns out to be rather dark. And so it creates this hole effect, but there is no hole that exists on the sun,” explains the director of the Planetarium and astrophysicist Olivier Hernandez.

This is a phenomenon occurring more frequently when we approach a “solar maximum”. These occur every 11 years.

“Every 11 years, the sun reaches a maximum of activity and we are approaching this maximum which will take place in July 2025. In the coming years, we will see more and more spots,” specifies Mr. Hernandez.

It should be noted that coronal holes are safe for humans.
