(Hollywood) Nine people were injured on Monday night when gunshots rang out along a promenade in Hollywood, Florida, causing people to run frantically for safety along the crowded beach for Memorial Day.
Several of the victims were taken to a children’s hospital, police spokeswoman Deanna Bettineschi said. However, authorities have yet to release the ages of the victims or provide details of their medical condition.
The preliminary investigation shows that an altercation between two groups resulted in gunfire, police said. One person has been arrested and another suspect is still wanted.
Videos posted to Twitter on Monday evening show emergency medical teams responding and providing aid to scores of injured people.
Police said there would be a heavy police presence as the investigation continues. Authorities have also set up an area to allow family members to reunite.
Hollywood Beach is a popular beach destination about 17 miles south of Fort Lauderdale and 32 miles north of Miami.
