Commendation to transgender human rights activist Xie Haolin for his efforts to fight for gender “recognition”
In addition, every year the “Hong Kong Gay and Lesbian Film Festival” awards the Prism Award to individuals or organizations that have made contributions to the gay community. This year, the Prism Award was awarded to Xie Haolin – Henry is a transgender human rights activist. He selflessly and fearlessly made his story as a transgender person public and shared it with all walks of life, which greatly increased the public’s understanding and attention to sexual minorities. After serving in another local transgender organization for a year, Henry established the Transgender Equality Association of Hong Kong (TEHK) in 2020. The association is committed to ensuring that Hong Kong society aligns with world standards on transgender rights and human rights issues. TEHK is not affiliated with any political party or foundation. It puts the needs and equality of the transgender community as its top priority and focuses on improving the deficiencies of Hong Kong’s LGBT organizations in human rights and legal knowledge initiatives. Henry began applying for review in 2017, proposing to the court that he could change the gender marker listed on his ID card without having to undergo a full gender reassignment surgery. After losing two cases, the case was finally won in 2023. This is an extremely arduous process.

At the opening ceremony, the conference awarded the Linglong Award to Xie Haolin as a mark of recognition and recognition. In his speech, Xie Haolin thanked the conference for recognizing his work for transgender equality over the past six years, including his efforts in the areas of surgery-free replacement of certificates and gender recognition. He said:“I would like to thank my team of lawyers, including the defunct Wei Zhida Law Firm; my friends; media friends; and local and overseas gay rights comrades. Without their practical help and support, I would not have been able to complete the 6-year judicial review marathon. Long-distance running has successfully overturned the cruel policy of “organ harvesting” and the requirement of cross-sex sterilization and sexual organ reconstruction in order to obtain a certificate. So today this honor not only belongs to me, but also to them.”Xie Haolin also urged the government to implement the court order and launch a new policy for renewing certificates so that transgender friends can go to school, work, get married, and start families normally.
