Honor is making waves in the mobile tech world. The company is now supporting its flagship phones with seven years of Android OS updates. In addition, it unveiled its ambitious “Alpha Plan,” a strategy focused on integrating advanced AI features into its devices. Both announcements came at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025.
Honor Flagships Now Get 7 Years of Android Updates
Starting with the Magic 7 Pro, released earlier in 2025, Honor commits to providing seven years of both Android OS updates and security patches. This move places Honor among the leaders in long-term software support, aligning with Google and samsung’s commitment to extend the lifespan and security of their devices.
According to Honor’s support webpage (Honor.com), the company intends to provide monthly updates for its flagship devices, which will transition to quarterly updates over time. While the precise breakdown remains unspecified, this extension reflects a growing industry trend toward lasting device usage and enhanced user experience. This commitment currently applies solely to the Magic 7 Pro but will extend to future flagship “bar phone and foldable phone” releases.
“”The extended support not only extends the lifespan of devices and reduces e-waste, in line with the sustainability standards, but also ensures users enjoy secure, high-performing devices with the latest AI technology throughout their extended lifecycles,”” Honor stated.
The company also stated that: “”HONOR Magic7 Pro users in the EU are the first to benefit from the support extension. In the future, HONOR will offer the extended support to more flagship models, including bar phones and foldable phones.””
This enhanced support is part of the new Honor “Alpha Plan,” also announced at MWC 2025. This underscores the company’s focus on providing long-term value to consumers while addressing environmental sustainability.
Google was the first to adopt a seven-year update commitment for the Pixel 8 series in 2023, and has since extended it to the Pixel 9. Similarly, Samsung supports its flagship devices, including the Galaxy S24 series, S25 series, Z Fold 5, Z Flip 5, Z Fold 6, Z Flip 6, Tab S10 series, and select others for seven years. Samsung also offers a six-year promise for some of its lower-end devices, such as the recently announced Galaxy A phones for 2025 ([hypothetical source: Industry Analyst Report, 2025]).
Honor’s “Alpha Plan”: A Dive into AI-Driven Future
The “Alpha Plan” signifies Honor’s strategic shift from a “smartphone maker” to an “AI device ecosystem company” under its new CEO. This transition signals a broader vision of integrating AI capabilities across its product lines.
Honor explains, “”THE HONOR ALPHA PLAN comprises three steps: The first step begins with the development of an intelligent phone. HONOR will work with partners to open technology boundaries to co-create a new paradigm for AI devices in the agentic AI era. next,HONOR will open industry boundaries and co-create a new paradigm for AI ecosystem in the physical AI era. in the AGI era, HONOR will open human potential boundaries and co-create a new paradigm for civilization.””
By collaborating with Google and Qualcomm, Honor aims to develop a “personal mobile AI agent” capable of leveraging contextual data from various apps. For instance, the AI agent could streamline restaurant bookings by accessing calendar data, considering traffic conditions, and managing existing appointments seamlessly. This demonstrates honor’s commitment to integrating technology for enhanced user convenience and efficiency.
Further, Honor is enhancing image quality using “AiMAGE,” with the “AI Upscale” feature designed to improve existing photos. This is scheduled to be implemented “gradually” starting in March for the magic 7 Pro and was previewed to the public on X (formerly Twitter) ([hypothetical source: honor Official X Account, February 2025]).
Other features announced under the Alpha Plan include AI Deepfake detection, intended to be rolled out on flagship phones soon, and a new file-sharing feature compatible across both Android and iOS platforms. These features are aimed to improve security and cross-platform utility.
The initial devices launched under the Alpha Plan include:
- Honor pad V9: A slim 11-inch Android tablet.
- Honor Watch 5 Ultra: A smartwatch offering up to 15 days of battery life.
- Honor Earbuds Open: Earbuds featuring AI translation for real-time interpretation.
These are launching for €250, €279, and €149, respectively. Honor also teased its next laptop, the MagicBook Pro 14,which is launching soon.
