Hospitality, catering, personal services… Labor needs remain very high

Businesses lack manpower. This year, business leaders plan to recruit more than three million employees. According to the annual survey conducted by Pôle emploi, entitled “Labour needs”, 30% of companies intend to hire and seven times out of ten for sustainable jobs.

Hotels and restaurants in attractive sectors

Among the sectors that recruit the most, hotels and restaurants top the list. 30,000 more hiring projects are planned compared to last year. Waiters, cooks or receptionists are particularly in demand. Other professions are on the rise, like those in personal services.

“We also have a good performance of the industry which anticipates an increase in its hiring intentions of almost 1%. On the other hand, we note some setbacks, in particular in construction or business services”, explains Stéphane Ducatez, deputy general manager in charge of the network at Pôle emploi.

Some occupations in tension

According to the Pôle Emploi survey, some sectors are having difficulty recruiting. “This rate of anticipated difficulties reaches levels that it had never reached before. 61% of projects are considered difficult. These difficulties are very high in the construction sector, industry and in niche trades such as those with high qualifications”, continues Stéphane Ducatez.

Pharmacists, bodybuilders or even roofers are the most difficult profiles for companies to recruit. Florent Falguière, head of a roofing company in Ariège, confirms these difficulties at the microphone of Europe 1: “It’s complicated because we’re trying to recruit young people. However, the salaries are quite attractive. A young can start at the Smic but can progress to the functions of team leader or site manager with salaries around 2,000 to 2,500 euros, perhaps more in Paris or in the big cities”.

According to Florent Falguière, this shortage of labor is not without consequences: “Sites take longer to complete. Customers expect a lot. Aren’t people interested in manual trades? Perhaps these jobs should be valued. It is possible that young people feel apprehensive about this job: we work on roofs, at height. Even if we have all the necessary safety, it is a job that can be scary.”
