Hostage Release Agreement: Hamas Delays Second Group Release Until Israel Respects Deal

The armed wing of Hamas said on Saturday that it would delay the release of the second group of hostages held in the Gaza Strip until Israel “respects the agreement” which entered into force the day before.

Earlier in the day, Israeli officials announced that fourteen hostages held in Gaza by Hamas would be released on Saturday in exchange for 42 Palestinian prisoners.

On Friday, 13 Israeli hostages – women and children – returned home in exchange for the release of 39 Palestinian prisoners, women and teenagers.

These releases in both camps are accompanied by a four-day renewable truce, obtained by Qatar with the support of the United States and Egypt, and which appeared to be respected on Saturday. The agreement, concluded following several weeks of negotiations, provides for the release of a total of 50 hostages held by Hamas and 150 Palestinians detained in Israeli prisons.
