Gatsch, sun and music: the nova rock festival offered everything a festival heart could desire!
The festival season starts every year in June at the latest, because Nova Rock is coming up! and with the edition of the festival in 2023 also comes the rain. Before the first day, the earthy area was completely soaked. But the organizers had learned from the experiences of the last few years: paths were covered with bark mulch, there was straw in front of the main stage and free rain ponchos were given out. But the main winner these days: the tried and tested rain boots. It was important not to let the weather spoil their mood and so some festival visitors made the best of the situation and integrated it into their appearance. a bit of glitter on the cheeks and splashes of dirt scattered on the body – the nova rock outfit was ready!

Now the mud was annoying, because a 2-minute walk quickly took 5 minutes or more. But the weather held up fairly well, so not a single show had to be canceled or postponed. The mood of the audience was not dampened either. on the contrary: already at “you me at six“ In the afternoon the crowd was very motivated. The mosh pits were heated up and the taps were already running at full speed. a little later “simple plan“ with a huge portion of rock and after the two acts I decided to familiarize myself a little with the area. There was a surprisingly large selection of vegetarian options and I even discovered something vegan that wasn’t fries.
Finally, strengthened, I found the smaller Red Bull stage, further to the edge of the field area. the Viennese played there “bibiza“. You can listen to it, I decided. Afterwards, I wanted to explore new horizons in my musical horizons and learn what ska is. A band named itself after the music, “shall-p“. They definitely had a lot of fans, but their appearance on stage in military uniform and marching formations made me feel uncomfortable, so I didn’t attend the performance for long. I then divided up the headliners of the evening: first I went to “materia” and later to “slipknot“. That was quite a contrast. Unfortunately I couldn’t do much with either of them and so I made my way home with the pyro effects and laser beams behind me.

Together with a few dozen others, I wanted to ring in the day at the red bull stage. This decision was not a wise one, because something happened that the technicians there had never experienced before: an entire power unit failed. We waited and waited and waited… at some point it became clear that it would still be hours before we could continue. four acts were postponed or canceled entirely. artists and fans alike were disappointed. I saw as an alternative “motionless in white” at. With their masks and heavily made-up faces, they were well prepared for Halloween. At least I got a slight creepy vibe. Only the setting in broad daylight took a bit of the drive out of the entire scenery. and unfortunately the stage fog and the colorful stage lights also went down.
One march to the Red Bull stage later, the technical problem still hadn’t been solved. Instead, I looked from the back of the area “fever 333“ and was massively impressed. The frontman was not only a singer, but also an acrobat, as he climbed around on the scaffolding. I wasn’t even worried about him crashing – the thrill was the appeal of the show. then played “sum 41“, which almost everyone present wanted to see again because its dissolution had already been announced. Even before the members appeared on stage, the smoke machine was already turned on, which wasn’t actually necessary. sum 41 were very strong even without special effects. Her performance was good but it seemed a bit rehearsed to me. There were hardly any emotional highlights and the stage design was also a bit boring. Finally, I was very grateful that at least a small fire show provided some variety.
Then I got into trouble: “three days grace” or “yungblud“? My plan: first one, then quickly run over – and I wasn’t the only one who had this idea! We were rewarded: Yungblud had released a new song on the same day that no one knew. He sang the melody and conducted us as we sang along. I was amazed: we, the audience, made up a pretty strong choir, despite the unknown song. that was very remarkable! His show was also remarkable: he jumped, he ran across the stage and demonstrated his skills on the tambourine. Wow!
A little later I went to “tenacious d“ with Jack Harlow – an almost quiet duo in comparison. The performance reminded me of some of the doctors’ concerts, because people were actually there for the breaks between the songs rather than for the actual music. There was a lot to laugh about and she also impressed with her excellent guitar playing.

I wanted to try the red bull stage again on the third day. the Austrian band “shatterfly“ opened in the blazing sun – and in my opinion they were in the right place at exactly the right time! But the band would also have cut a good figure on a main stage. Speaking of the main stage: they played there a little later “fine cream fish fillet“ and showed what it means to heat up the audience. Red mist sprayed from the instruments, there were cooling beer showers and an inflatable boat floated over the crowd. I finally switched to “wolfmother“Because I thought I might like them. But somehow her performance didn’t really blow me away. The singer was clearly having fun, he was constantly moving – but that wasn’t enough for me. I was missing a spark of magic in the whole thing.
next I examined the band “i prevail“. Exactly to the minute the rain started at the start of the concert – fortunately the rain didn’t last long. I was pleasantly surprised by the performance of “I Prevail” – I wasn’t expecting a metal band that also used other genres. I was also impressed by the two singers, who worked incredibly hard on every level and delivered from the first second.
A look at the festival schedule told me that my next item on the program was “casper“was. Curious, I went to the stage and suddenly found myself in a garden. There were plants and bushes everywhere – I wouldn’t necessarily have associated Casper with flowers and especially not at the Nova Rock Festival. and then I realized that everything was very stimming. Casper and flowers and nova rock, that goes together!
“Casper” was my personal introduction to the next (German-speaking) band “Picture book“. For Bilderbuch, the Nova Rock Festival was basically a home game. I saw them live for the second time and quickly realized that the band attracted people like a magnet. I only knew a few songs, but by the time I heard “Bungalow” my feet couldn’t stand still. The hit “Maschin” was made for the big stage anyway. Despite the large stage, they didn’t invest in their stage design: in the background, there was a white sheet with holes in front of a green wall. It seemed improvised, but that’s probably their aesthetic. There was something somehow attractive about the simplicity.

The rubber boots stayed at home on the last day because it was suddenly so hot that even long trousers were too much and I applied an extra layer of sunscreen. The nova rock offered all weather extremes, but also music extremes! the day before the group played as bouncers “scooter“, and opened on the last day “wendi’s bohemian brass music“. Without a bad conscience, I skipped both groups and preferred to spend my day at the red bull stage with the “ray.s“. This band was the act that won the artist voting. The four of them put in a lot of effort, including a harmonious stage outfit, well-rehearsed jumps and a charismatic guitar-bass battle. For me it was the perfect way to start the day.
Afterwards I saw “nothing but thieves“ – a band that I was looking forward to the most. and musically they didn’t disappoint me one bit. The crowd also dispersed, although very little happened on the stage, as the five of them stood as if glued to the spot. then followed the group “hollywood undead“. The band members took turns – with singing but also with the instruments. There was organized chaos on stage and they managed to make everything fit together. on recommendation, I switched over to “arch enemy“. I heard screams coming from the mouth of a singer with bright blue hair and wearing a tight blue leather outfit. Even if I didn’t necessarily remember the music, its appearance certainly did.
That evening it was easy for me to resist “Nightwish“ and for my favorite band “the doctors“to decide. They played a program that lasted almost 2.5 hours. As tradition demands, they started playing behind a curtain and from the first sounds of the song “Westerland” it was clear that it was really them! The crowd screamed and the first crowd surfers splashed over the crowd. What you also have to keep in mind with doctors: you don’t go to a band concert to hear the music. The music is more of a nice byproduct of their stand-up comedy show. and this show was once again extremely well done. For my part, I couldn’t stop laughing at times. They used their breaks not only to convey a good mood, but also to make important political announcements. And at the same time they played songs from all decades of their career, so that everyone really got their money’s worth.
the doctors were a successful end to the four days of the festival on the nova rock. at least almost, because those who still wanted and could still had the opportunity to watch the “falco tribute bandto listen to. This was Falco’s original band, performing together for the first time since Falco’s death. Various guest singers were also invited. It was a nice ending, even if it was almost a little sad. With euphoric nostalgia and melancholy in the heart, the Nova Rock 2023 finally came to an end.
