Houston Dynamo’s Loss to Charlotte FC in League Cup Quarter-Finals Robbed by Late Goals: Dynamo’s Defender’s Own Goal Seals Fate

The Houston Dynamo thought they were heading to the quarter-finals of the League Cup, but two goals conceded in less than two minutes deprived them of this privilege. Houston conceded in the 80th and 81st minutes of play in a 2-1 loss to Charlotte FC on Monday night.

The loss will leave an even more bitter taste in Houston since the winning goal was scored by Micael, Dynamo defender who scored against his side due to a lack of communication with his goalkeeper.

Thus, the Dynamo suffered their first defeat in almost a month, when the team lost against Minnesota United on July 12.

Dynamo therefore escapes an appointment with Lionel Messi and Inter Miami in the quarter-finals of the League Cup. It is rather Charlotte FC who will try to stop the Miami star on Friday. This will be the first meeting between the two teams in 2023.

It didn’t take long for Houston to come out on top and take the lead. From the 10th minute of play, Nelson Quinoes recovered the ball deep in the territory and he quickly crossed the ball for Corey Braid, left alone in front of the net. Braid immediately sent the ball into the back of the net with power to give Houston the lead.

Dynamo’s misfortunes, however, began in the second half, in the 80th minute of play. On a long recovery, Charlotte striker Patrick Agyemang made a good effort to recover the ball in the opposing zone. He then took advantage of goalkeeper Steve Clark’s poor outing to quickly send the ball into the back of the net and create the equalizer.

Charlotte was then far from suspecting that the team would not even have to take a shot to take the lead. Seconds later, Houston defender Micael attempted to put the ball behind him for goaltender Clark. The problem was that Clark was in the middle of the penalty area, as Micael’s pass headed towards the corner of the goal. Clark was unable to get the ball back in time and that own goal from Micael put Charlotte in charge.

The Dynamo were then unable to repair this blunder of Micael and the team admitted defeat.

In the other match, Queretaro defeated the New England Revolution 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation.

The game between the New York Red Bulls and the Union was postponed to Tuesday due to bad weather in the Philadelphia area.
