(CNN) — On Monday, the Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack that targeted an American ship in the Gulf of Aden, saying they fired a number of missiles at it.

The Houthi military spokesman, Brigadier General Yahya Saree, said in a statement that his group “carried out a military operation targeting an American ship in the Gulf of Aden with a number of missiles,” and added that the strikes were “accurate and direct.”

He pledged that any future strikes on Yemen “will not go unanswered,” and said that the Houthi group considers any American and British ships “participating in the aggression against our country as hostile targets.”

He added, “The Yemeni armed forces confirm that a response to the American and British attacks is inevitable and that any new attack will not remain without response and punishment.”

This comes after Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdel Salam said earlier on Monday that the group’s position “has not changed” in the wake of the US strikes on Yemen.

The Houthi-run Al-Masirah media channel published a statement made by Abdul Salam to Archyde.com news agency in which he pledged to continue attacks in the Red Sea “until the Israeli aggression in Gaza stops.”

The Houthis repeated their claims that non-Israeli ships not heading to Israel are “safe” from attack.

On the other hand, US Central Command said in a statement that the ship suffered minor damage, and no injuries were reported.

It is noteworthy that the Central Command stated, on January 4, that the last ten Houthi attacks did not target ships heading towards or affiliated with Israel.
