A Canadian who desperately wanted to become a mother went on a Facebook search for a sperm donor, asking a complete stranger to become the parent of her children.
“At the sperm bank, you can only meet the donor when your child turns 18. But I wanted to know the person first,” said Ontarian Sarah Mangat, 34, according to “The Independent” on Monday.
Single for almost 8 years, the 30-year-old decided to embark on the adventure of a single mother in 2020, first planning to do business with a sperm bank.
However, the “too impersonal” process quickly put her off, so the woman instead turned to the Facebook group “Canadian Sperm Donors” to find a parent.
“I was already going to become a mother in an unconventional way – why not find the donor myself”, she continued to the English media.
After chatting with a few people, and receiving some “weird messages”, the current passed with one of them, who agreed to become his sperm donor.
Soon, she undertook 14 months of fertility testing and treatment at Victory Fertility and Reproductive Health Clinic in Ontario, before becoming pregnant with twin girls in November 2021.
“I almost had a heart attack when I found out there were two,” she said.
Despite complications, the new mom welcomed two premature twins, Elora and Addison, on April 30, 2022. And after traumatic months, where the two underdeveloped babies had to be hooked up to machines, the mom was finally able to bring them back home, healthy.
“You can’t wait forever for the right person to come into your life. If you’re thinking of doing it alone, I say “do it”. It’s the best decision I’ve made”, she confided, for the one year of her babies.
