A first responder dad saw his one-year-old son fall into the water without a life jacket in Helmet, California. He quickly took action to avoid drowning.

Firefighter and paramedic Zachary Petite got the scare of his life when his one-year-old son, Cole, jumped into the water after taking off his life jacket.

The father was taking care of his other child when the event occurred.

“I turned around and couldn’t find him. I finally found him when he sank to the bottom of the pool,” the father of three said in an interview with >.

The rescue was filmed by an outside camera, where Mr. Petite is seen lying on the surface and pulling his son out of the water.

“I ran to the pool, picked it up and got it out of the water,” he said.

Leading cause of death in children

According to data from Center for Disease Control and Preventiondrowning is the leading cause of death in children aged one to four years.

National Drowning Prevention Alliance executive director Adam Katchmarchi says parents have a false sense of security about using floats.

“Often, children do not understand the usefulness of these floats. When Cole took it off, he didn’t think twice and jumped into the water,” he told ABC.

Most drownings happen when parents are distracted or children gain unsupervised access, according to Center data.

Mr. Katchmarchi suggests designating adults for rotational supervision. The importance is that he always has someone to make sure there are no signs of distress.
