Apple’s iOS 27 update decouples GymKit from the Apple Watch. Users can now pair an iPhone and AirPods Pro 3 directly with compatible gym equipment to track indoor workouts, routing biometric heart rate data and machine metrics without requiring a wrist-worn wearable.
How iPhone and AirPods Mimic the Apple Watch Gym Experience
Since its 2017 debut, Apple’s GymKit framework has relied on the Apple Watch. When a user tapped their watch against a supported cardio machine, the ecosystem synced heart rate data from the wrist while pulling distance, incline, and speed from the hardware.
According to reporting from 9to5Mac, iOS 27 shifts that architectural dependency. By tapping an iPhone on a GymKit-compatible treadmill and selecting an indoor walking session, users initiate a handshake between three distinct devices.
The operational loop runs as follows during an active session:
- AirPods Pro 3: Act as the source for heart rate data, streaming pulse data to the treadmill console.
- GymKit Treadmill: Measures physical variables that a phone or earbuds cannot calculate independently, including belt distance, exact incline, and speed.
- iPhone: Functions as the workout computer, receiving machine data while securely caching workout metrics locally in the Fitness application before scrubbing temporary logs from the hardware.
This division of labor solves a friction point for users who do not own an Apple Watch but still want automated gym tracking.
Ecosystem Realities and the Gold Standard Disparity
While this software update lowers the barrier to entry for the Apple Fitness ecosystem, engineering trade-offs remain. Apple Watch models running watchOS 27 still maintain more accurate tracking for treadmill workouts.
GymKit remains the gold standard for accurate data.
