Shiffrin also had an explanation for choosing the Star Wars character: “The background is pretty simple: Grogu (Baby Yoda) is one of my favorite characters. His quirks are so funny and he’s lovable and tough at the same time.”
Last year, she started “using him as inspiration when I got nervous at races, and it became kind of a running joke with my team and family.”
In pressure situations, there is now actually always someone who whispers “Grogu” to her. “And that helps me calm down,” said the World Cup record winner.
Shiffrin had previously asked her fans for name suggestions on Instagram. The American also presented other ideas, including Iga (after friend and tennis star Iga Swiatek), Loopie (nickname for boyfriend Aleksander Aamodt Kilde) and Petra (after slalom competitor Petra Vlhova).
Shiffrin is now “mom” to seven reindeer: Rudolph (2013), Sven (2016), Mr. Gru (2018), Ingemar (2019), Sunny (2022), Lorax (2022) and now Grogu.
