Last February, the photo of a vehicle registered “HH-88”, perceived by some as a reference to Adolph Hitler, circulating in Brussels had caused a stir and had revived the debate around the filtering of personalized license plates. Questioned by the N-VA MP Michael Freilich, the Minister of Mobility Georges Gilkinet said that the owner of the vehicle had been contacted by the services of the SPF Mobilité in order to change his plate. “Steps are underway to change the plate. It will then be blacklisted and will never be granted again.”, indicated the minister in his response, specifying that “the royal decree relating to the registration of vehicles does not allow the automatic removal of a registration plate for the sole reason of its registration”. The authorities cannot currently remove plates already in circulation.
And this is precisely what the N-VA is asking for, in a bill that will soon be tabled in the Chamber. “With this proposal, the administration could remove the problematic plates that would have fallen through the cracks. In doing so, we send a clear message: racism and anti-Semitism will never be tolerated.”, comments Michael Freilich. The Minister specifies that work is being carried out to adjust the filtering systems of the DIV and that he is awaiting the results of the analysis in order to possibly modify the law.
