A study has found that a ‘cognitive distancing’ strategy to cope with stressful situations can actually increase work performance. [사진=게티이미지뱅크]There are people who try to distance themselves from negative thoughts and emotions in order to reduce pain when they are put in a difficult situation. Called “cognitive distancing,” this is a basic technique in cognitive behavioral therapy that involves mentally taking a step back from immediate reactions and looking at the situation from a more objective, calmer perspective.

Strategies for cognitive distancing include reframing the stressful situation and thinking “it doesn’t matter” or ignoring it as if nothing happened. However, studies have shown that this method improves decision-making by making actual choices more deliberate and increasing sensitivity to negative consequences.

Researchers at University College London designed an experiment in which 995 participants recruited online received different rewards when they performed tasks such as pairing Japanese hiragana characters. During this process, the researchers divided the participants into two groups and had only one group use the cognitive distancing strategy.

When the learning tasks performed by the participants were then compared, participants who used ‘cognitive distancing’ performed better on the learning tasks. They were more likely to consistently make choices with large rewards, and showed a tendency to maintain rational choices, such as quickly changing their decisions and making choices with large rewards, even when they made choices with low rewards.

“These results demonstrate that skills taught in psychotherapy can help improve symptoms of mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety by changing the way people see and learn about information in the world,” the researchers said.

However, the researchers were unable to measure how effectively individuals used the cognitive distancing strategy in this study, and this strategy cannot expect the same results as long-term psychotherapy.”

The results of this study were published in a recent issue of Psychological Medicine, a psychiatric journal.
