Julio Laines’ CSD Zacapa and Amarini Villatoro’s Xelajú MC tied 1-1 this Thursday, March 28, in a duel corresponding to matchday 13 of the 2024 Clausura Tournament of the Guatemalan National Soccer League.
Wilber Rentería put the Quetzalteans ahead in the 48th minute when he took a penalty. Julio García scored for Zacapa in the 85th with a zendo shot inside the area that left José Calderón with no options.
The tie leaves CSD Zacapa in a complicated position facing relegation since with four games still to play (they have one less) they are five away from leaving the red zone, Xinabajul Huehue (who lost to Achuapa on this day) has 33 points, while the Zacapaneco roosters have 28.
On the other hand, Xelajú MC cannot relax either, since it has the same units as Xinabajul, but like Zacapa, it has the option to add 12 more points.
How does the relegation outlook look with three days remaining?
Zacapa currently occupies 11th position in the accumulated table, has 28 points and has the option to add 12 more. On their calendar are the duels against Comunicaciones, Xinabajul, Coatepeque and Malacateco.
If the roosters want to avoid relegation they must win at least two of those duels and expect setbacks from either Xinabajul or Xelajú MC who are his closest rivals.
Xinabajul, for its part, has three games on its calendar: a direct duel against Zacapa, a visit to Municipal and closes the tournament at home against Antigua. The “X“It only aspires to 9 points, so if it loses to Zacapa and does not score in any of its other two duels it could lose the category.
The clearest outlook is for Xelajú MC, just as Zacapa has the option to add 12 points but they have tough games: their next duels will be against Municipal, Achuapa, Antigua and Mixco.

In the duel of the night, Antigua beat Comunicaciones 3-0 and further boosted its lead in Clausura 2024.
