A common misconception is that anyone who buys by looking at the labels has no idea regarding wine. Top sommelier Aldo Sohm, on the other hand, writes in his book Alles Wein that when it comes to choosing a wine, he tends not to go for fancier labels. Because for him they are “a sign of high-end producers who are not so interested in the craftsmanship in the bottle. Winegrowers are farmers! They don’t have tens of thousands of euros for elegant label designs.” Possibly, but perhaps those who design the label are satisfied with payment in kind, i.e. just a few cases of wine?
