What is the electricity consumption of an internet box and how much does it cost you?
When we think of household objects that consume the most energy, we don’t necessarily think of internet boxes. And yet, you will see that they consume almost as many kWh as other household appliances.
According to ADEME, the ecological transition agency, an internet box is used 22 hours a day. And it consumes 97 kWh of electricity every year. This represents an annual cost of €16 per year, or approximately 2% of the annual electricity consumption of French people. You probably don’t know it, but 97 kWh is almost as much as a washing machine (7 kg, used 198 cycles per year), which consumes 101 kWh per year, or €17.60.
That’s not all. Who says internet box often also says TV decoder, since the overwhelming majority of French people are equipped with a triple play internet offer. Still according to ADEME, the TV decoder of your internet box, used 19 hours a day, consumes an average of 87 kWh per year, which represents a cost of €15/year.
In total, therefore, your internet offer costs you €31 per year for electricity.
More broadly, the ADEME estimates that the uses of electricity linked to the category “computing and multimedia” represent 13.5% of a household’s electricity consumption.
How to reduce the energy cost of your internet box?
In this period of inflation which weighs on the purchasing power of households, there are no small savings and you will find that there are some very simple ways to reduce the energy consumption of your internet box and your TV decoder:
Switch to fiber. If you are eligible for very high speed with fiber, don’t hesitate a second and subscribe to a fiber offer. An ADSL Internet box is indeed much more greedy in electricity than a fiber box. They respectively consume about 280 kWh/year against 60 to 175 kWh/year, depending on the equipment currently available on the market.
Change your old box for latest generation equipment. For several years now, Internet service providers have been offering new eco-designed boxes. This contributes to improving the energy performance of Wi-Fi modems and routers. It is possible to program standby mode at a fixed time or to opt for standby after a period of inactivity. It is also possible to disconnect box equipment when not in use.
