How PRISA Media Uses AI to Transform Audio Content

PRISA Media has deployed AI-powered transcription across its audio operations in Spain, Chile, Colombia and Mexico, converting radio broadcasts and podcasts into searchable text to streamline content reuse and accessibility. The initiative, led by Diego J Pruneda Paz, Director of Transformation, Innovation, and Voice Projects, was presented at the WAN-IFRA Frankfurt AI Forum in April 2026. PRISA operates more than 1,200 journalists across radio stations broadcasting live 24/7, with newsrooms ranging from national hubs to teams of fewer than five people. The AI transcription system feeds into a multimedia platform that allows journalists to extract quotes, generate summaries, and produce short-form videos by combining audio, transcripts and images. Transcripts are also used as subtitles, enabling multimedia storytelling without requiring separate licensing for each newsroom. The project received funding from a Spanish government grant supporting AI adoption in media, which Pruneda Paz said made the initiative viable. PRISA has identified three strategic areas for AI utilize: unlocking value from its content catalog, improving operational efficiency, and differentiating its offerings from competitors and platforms. The company emphasized that audio had previously been a “black box” for text-optimized search engines, limiting discoverability. By transcribing all audio, PRISA has made its archives searchable and actionable across its content management systems. The WAN-IFRA Frankfurt AI Forum, held in April 2026, featured Pruneda Paz as a speaker on AI applications in media innovation. PRISA owns over 50 brands including El PAÍS, As, and radio networks in Spain and Latin America, positioning it as the world’s leading Spanish-language media group. The transcription system is now integrated into PRISA’s internal workflows, with no public timeline announced for further expansion or external release of the technology.
