“How Saudi Arabia Averted the Domino Effect”: Insights from a Former Minister on the Kingdom’s Response to the “Arab Spring”

Nizar Madani, the former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in Saudi Arabia, recently spoke about how the Kingdom handled the events of the Arab Spring. Madani revealed that the Kingdom took great effort to avoid a “domino fall” and the potential impact of those events on Saudi Arabia. The Arab Spring was an event of great significance to the Kingdom, and the government worked to follow up on the situation, find out why it happened, and how it could be avoided. The Kingdom was seeking to distance itself from the conflict in order to preserve its security and stability. Madani emphasized that the Arab Spring had affected many neighboring Arab countries and caused a crisis, but the Kingdom was able to overcome it while still suffering from its repercussions.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – The former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in Saudi Arabia, Nizar Madani, revealed the way the Kingdom dealt with the events of the “Arab Spring”, indicating that it was working to avoid a “domino fall” and the impact of those events on Saudi Arabia.

Madani said, in an interview he conducted on the “Al-Liwan” program with the Saudi journalist, Abdullah Al-Mudaifer: “The (Arab Spring) was one of the important events to which the Kingdom devoted great efforts to follow up and find out how what happened, why what happened, and how the development of the situation can be avoided…” .

And the former Saudi minister continued, saying: “There was a theory called the domino theory, which means that if something happened in one region, it would spread to another without stopping, and this is what the Kingdom was seeking to avoid.”

And Madani added, “There was a careful follow-up of the events and an attempt to distance the Kingdom from entering into this fray, to preserve the Kingdom’s security and stability, and to follow the events closely, because of course what affects the region positively or negatively affects all countries in the region.”

And the former Saudi minister added, “Once again, I repeat what I said from the beginning, that this was among the challenges that the Kingdom faced: How can it distance itself from the repercussions and secretions of a phenomenon that affected many neighboring Arab countries and caused what everyone knows, but thank God it was able to.” The Kingdom has to overcome the crisis as a crisis, but its secretions and repercussions, unfortunately, are still suffering from it until this moment,” he said.

In conclusion, Nizar Madani’s revelations shed light on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s efforts to prevent the fallout and impact of the Arab Spring on its own stability. The domino theory, which predicted that the political unrest in one country would spread to others causing chaos and instability, loomed over the region’s leaders. Amid the challenges and difficult decisions faced by the Kingdom, it managed to overcome the crisis while maintaining stability within its borders. Nonetheless, the repercussions of the Arab Spring continue to impact the region until this day.
