Tardigrades are often referred to as the indestructible “superheroes” of the animal world – and they’re not entirely wrong: the eight-legged, barrel-shaped creatures, which are only a fraction of a millimeter in size, have managed to thrive in practically all biotopes on earth. Experts discovered them in tropical jungles as well as in rain puddles in temperate zones, in the lightless regions of the deep sea or in the icy wastes of the Antarctic. Even in the death zones of the Himalayas at more than 6,000 meters above sea level, the tiny jacks-of-all-trades can make a living.
