How the funeral feast changed over time – food & drink

“Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we will be dead,” it says in First Corinthians. It’s the biblical Yolo, carpe diem for the older generation. In other words: You should live in the here and now. The fact that one should enjoy and celebrate life is also reflected in the tradition of the funeral feast. After a funeral, people usually gather at the church pub around the corner to eat, drink, gossip and laugh together. The mourners tell stories regarding the deceased, crack jokes, exchange memories and celebrate their life.
