Apple’s MacBook Pro has maintained a remarkably consistent industrial design since late 2021, while undergoing massive internal changes. Over the past five years, the pro laptop lineup has phased out the controversial Touch Bar, transitioned from Intel processors to increasingly powerful M-series chips, and upgraded to brighter mini-LED displays.
The Design Evolution That Finally Ditched the Touch Bar
When Apple introduced the Touch Bar on the 2016 MacBook Pro, the feature arrived alongside a wave of changes that included an exclusive reliance on USB-C ports and the controversial Butterfly keyboard mechanism. Marketed as a modern alternative to traditional function keys, the OLED touch strip faced criticism from users who missed tactile feedback, particularly a physical Escape key. “we actually haven’t been using them [function keys] anymore. So we’ve mapped other functions onto these keys. We’ve put volume and brightness on them.”

Beyond the Touch Bar, that entire generation of laptops suffered from thermal throttling on Intel processors, removed the beloved MagSafe charging connector, and required users to purchase multiple dongles for basic peripheral connections. The keyboard issues were severe enough that Apple had to pay $50 million for the faulty design.
The course correction arrived in late 2021 when Apple completely redesigned the MacBook Pro around the newly introduced M1 Pro and M1 Max processors. This major overhaul introduced an industrial design with improved thermal cooling, the return of ports including HDMI and the SD card slot, the comeback of MagSafe charging, and a mini-LED display while retaining a reliable scissor keyboard. Apple’s press release noted the company was adding physical function keys, including a wider Escape key, replace the Touch Bar, bringing back the familiar, tactile feel of mechanical keys that pro users love.
Bringing Pro Features to the M3 Base Model
For years, stepping up to a proper MacBook Pro meant paying a significant premium for higher-end chips. That boundary shifted when Apple updated the base model with the M3 chip, officially shedding the old Intel-era design aesthetic for its entry-level professional machine. The updated base model adopted a 14-inch mini-LED display, a more capable webcam, an improved thermal cooling system, and the complete port selection found on higher-end configurations, including the MagSafe connector and SD card slot.
Priced at $1,599, the redesigned base model made professional-grade hardware more accessible. Users no longer needed to purchase extra chip tiers just to escape the limitations of the older chassis, which had been plagued by user complaints and restricted connectivity.
Processing Power from M1 to the M5 Architecture
Silicon development has accelerated dramatically since Apple first moved away from Intel. Four generations after the initial M1 release, the current lineup features the M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max chips, with expectations pointing toward an eventual jump to the M7 generation. The M5 family utilizes a 3-nanometer process technology with a Fusion Architecture designed to boost core counts and energy efficiency far beyond the 5-nanometer M1 series.
Performance metrics underscore the hardware shift over the five-year span. Graphics performance on the M5 is up to 2.5 times faster than the original M1, while base memory bandwidth has more than doubled from 68.3 GB/s on the M1 to 153 GB/s on the M5. Furthermore, the M5 features a redesigned GPU with dedicated Neural Accelerators in every core, delivering up to six times the peak GPU compute for AI tasks compared to the M1. RAM configurations have expanded as well; while M1 machines topped out at 64GB starting from a base of 8GB, M5 machines start at 16GB and scale up to 128GB of RAM on the M5 Max.
Brighter Liquid Retina XDR Displays
While the MacBook Pro has maintained a mini-LED foundation since late 2021, display technology has quietly improved beneath the surface. With the introduction of the M4 Pro and M4 Max options, Apple upgraded the portable workstations with a brighter Liquid Retina XDR display. These panels deliver up to 1,000 nits of brightness for standard dynamic range content and reach up to 1,600 nits for high dynamic range content. By comparison, the initial M1 Pro model offered 500 nits of standard brightness, meaning newer iterations provide double the brightness at an equivalent battery capacity to improve outdoor visibility.
As rumors point toward an upcoming redesign featuring OLED displays and touchscreen capabilities, the MacBook Pro’s five-year trajectory demonstrates how internal component engineering can continuously modernize a stable industrial chassis.
