macOS makes it very easy to display the selection window for emojis and other symbols, by pressing a single key. Here’s how to take advantage of it.

If you’re using an Apple machine running a recent version of macOS, Monterey 12, Ventura 13 or newer, you can enable a quick access feature to emoji which allows, as its name suggests, to bring up the emoji selection window by simply pressing a key on the keyboard.

Here’s how to enable the emoji shortcut feature on macOS:

  1. Go to the Apple menu (the apple-shaped icon in the upper left corner) and then choose System Settings or System Preferences.
  2. Go to Keyboard.
  3. Look for the line “Press the ‘globe/fn’ key for:” and select “Show Emoji & Symbols”. On Ventura or newer, this looks slightly different than on Monterey, but the option has more or less the same wording.
  4. Confirm that the choice works by pressing the globe/fn key. You should see the emoji selection window appear.

You are set.

Type an emoji on Mac using the fn key

You can now access the emoji selection window instantly from anywhere on your Mac by simply pressing the fn/globe key.

The standard emoji search feature works too, as it’s the Mac’s full-featured Emoji & Symbols tool.

Scroll through the many symbols and emoji available, it’s the easiest to insert the one you want.

Some Mac users will parallel the default setting for iPad when using a keyboard with that device, where pressing the globe key brings up the emoji selection window in iPadOS.

For many Mac users, this is faster and more efficient than pressing the Cmd + Ctrl + Space keyboard shortcut. If you use emoji frequently, you will no doubt appreciate the ease of this method.

The feature is not enabled by default on Macs running macOS Monterey. It is therefore necessary to remember to activate it in the settings as indicated above. And this does not override the “normal” operation of the fn key.
