How to Erase Screensavers in macOS Sonoma 14

O macOS Sonoma 14 brought several new features that aim to make your Mac experience even better and/or more enjoyable. One of them is the possibility of using different screen protectors (screensavers) of landscapes, the Earth and also underwater environments — something that is already well known to Apple TV users.

Despite being a really cool new feature that can give your computer a new look, these recordings pose a problem: they can fill up your Mac’s storage — something that can leave you with no space to store applications, photos, videos or other files.

It turns out that, to date, Apple does not offer an easy/simple option to delete these screensavers that you have already downloaded.

But don’t worry, it’s not the end of the world either: the staff of Ars Technica foundin further testing, that these screen protectors use the so-called purgeable storage of macOS, that is, the operating system starts to delete these screensavers (starting with those that were downloaded first) when the machine’s storage starts to get full — similar behavior to what occurs with iCloud files.

But you can delete them anyway if you prefer not to take any risks. See below how to do this! ????‍????

Open Finder and in the menu bar, go to Go » Go for Pasta…. Optionally, you can also do this using the shortcut ⇧ shift ⌘ command G. Then type the following path:

/Library/Application Support/com.apple.idleassetsd/Customer

With this folder open, click on the subfolders until you find the protectors you want to delete. To delete them, select them, right-click on them and choose “Move to Trash”.

If necessary, confirm the action by entering your password or authenticating via Touch ID.

Then, delete these savers from the system Trash and wait a few seconds or minutes until the wallpaper becomes unavailable — you can check this by going to System Settings » Screen Saver.

In these cases, the downward-facing arrow icon will appear next to the screen saver, which means that to use it again, you will need to download it again.
