Although summer is a time for fun in the sun, it also brings the risk of heat stroke, especially for children.
As temperatures rise, the country is witnessing heat waves, putting youth between the ages of 3 and 15 and sometimes even younger children at risk of dehydration.
As parents it is important to take steps to keep young children safe and cool during the summer months.
Here are 5 simple and effective ways to prevent heat stroke in children. Take advantage of them, and protect those little bulbs from hot air blasts.
Children should be kept hydrated
One of the best ways to prevent heat stroke in children is to keep them well hydrated.
Encourage your children to drink adequate amounts of water throughout the day, even if they are not thirsty. You can make the water tastier by adding pieces of fruit like lemon or cucumber.
Children often neglect to use water, especially when they are playing outside. Drinking plenty of water and avoiding sugary drinks will help you keep children hydrated and healthy.
Keep an eye on the weather
Pay attention to the weather forecast and plan your day accordingly.
Avoid scheduling outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
If you must go outside, look for shady spots where your children can take a break from the sun.
Choose light clothing
Dress your children in light, loose-fitting clothes, made from fabrics like cotton. Light-colored clothes help keep them cool by shielding them from the sun’s rays. Don’t forget to use a hat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes from the sun.
Cool the children
Try to avoid activities that make your child sweaty or overheated, especially during the hottest part of the day.
Instead, opt for indoor sports or water-based activities like swimming.
If you are outside, take frequent breaks in the shade and encourage your children to rest and hydrate.
Encourage them to take breaks during playtime. Aim to drink at least 13 glasses of water a day.
Serve seasonal fruits as snacks
Fruits are not only delicious but also great for keeping kids hydrated.
