WhatsApp has begun a rollout of a username reservation system, allowing users to claim unique identifiers. This feature, accessible via the app’s account settings, enables users to eventually mask their phone numbers during interactions.

WhatsApp has introduced a way to reserve names. The platform is allowing users to maintain a constant presence in the network.
The reservation process is straightforward. Users can access the configuration menu by navigating to Settings > Account > Username. If the option is not immediately visible, the application displays an in-app prompt above the conversation list. The system allows for three distinct pathing options: importing a handle from Facebook or Instagram, creating a custom identifier, or utilizing an automated generator to suggest available handles.
It is critical to note that this change does not mean you can create a WhatsApp account without providing a phone number. It is still a mandatory element. The username will allow you to hide your number from people you do not want to share it with, for example in group conversations.
The Security Logic Behind the Four-Digit PIN
Furthermore, you can set a four-digit key for the username, which will also be necessary to connect with someone. It is enabled by clicking on the option to contact via user, which is set to “Everyone” by default. If your name is leaked or accidentally passed on by a friend after this option is enabled, the connection will require a key in addition to the name.

Why Meta is Resisting the “Social Network” Label
WhatsApp does not want to turn into a social network. There is no option for searching for people according to the new service, as WhatsApp does not want to change into a social platform. The managers of the messenger want it to be possible to contact only people who have previously provided their nickname.
