The Human Toll and Infrastructure Devastation in La Guaira
Nearly eight weeks after the seismic event, the human cost continues to climb. According to updates reported by La Voz de la Nación, the death toll from the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes reached 6,438 after recovery crews pulled additional bodies from the rubble. Jorge Rodríguez, president of the National Assembly, noted that emergency teams have cleared more than 528,000 tons of debris along the coastal cordillera.
The coastal state of La Guaira remains the hardest-hit area. Out of thousands of inspected structures, authorities classified numerous buildings as high-risk, uninhabitable zones. Thousands of families now live in temporary shelters or among structural ruins, where running water is virtually nonexistent. Norberto Bausson, civil engineer and president of the Venezuelan Society of Hydraulic Engineering, explained that Venezuela historically possessed a robust system of 54 major national networks and over 140 medium systems designed to harness reservoirs like Camatagua, Lagartijo, and Tulé.
Bausson noted that the system began a progressive, multi-decade collapse over the last 27 years due to lost technical capacity and chronic under-maintenance. When the earthquakes struck, they ruptured what little structural integrity remained in pipelines, pumping stations, and treatment facilities, rendering major supply arteries like the Turimiquire tunnel project stagnant and leaving towns like Cumaná in Sucre stranded without piped water for up to 150 days.

Relief efforts now face a relentless ticking clock. Meteorological forecasts indicate that the Súper Niño weather pattern will drive prolonged droughts, intense heatwaves, and severe hydrological stress across Venezuela through the first bimestre of 2027.

In response, regional chambers of commerce such as Fedecámaras Sucre have urgently demanded coordinated action to restore basic electricity and water infrastructure.
