The North Atlantic is currently at an average of almost 23 degrees warmer than it has ever been at this time of year since satellite measurements began 40 years ago. In mid-June it was even around one degree warmer than the average for the comparable period from 1982 to 2011, according to data from the US climate agency NOAA.
