How Wolverine’s Hellfire Fight Made Him an Icon

On the last page of Uncanny X-Men No. 132, Logan rises from the sewer water and says, “Okay, suckers–you’ve taken your best shot! Now it’s my turn!” On the last page of Uncanny X-Men No. 132, Wolverine rose from the sewer and roared, Okay, suckers–you’ve taken your best shot! Now it’s my turn! This moment, published in 1980, became one of the most recognizable images in comic book history and marked Wolverine’s definitive coming-out party.

The Hellfire Club Fight

The event unfolded in Uncanny X-Men Nos. 132-134, written by Chris Claremont and John Byrne with pencils by John Byrne and inks by Terry Austin. During an infiltration of the Hellfire Club, the villain Harold Leland, the Black Bishop, used his mutant mass-increasing powers to slam Wolverine into a sewer, believing he would drown. To the Hellfire Club’s shock, Logan emerged from the water with his iconic line, beginning his brutal solo assault to save his captured teammates.

A Solo Showcase

This storyline was important because it showed Wolverine acting entirely on his own, without the guidance of teammates like Cyclops, Professor Xavier, or Storm. After his friends were beaten and captured, Logan systematically hunted down the Hellfire Club’s knights, meeting each with a bloody and deadly fate. His approach was not reckless; each move was strategic, as he knew a single mistake could mean the death of his teammates. He even broke free from a tussle with a mind-controlled Jean Grey, freeing Cyclops in the process, before getting his rematch and defeating Leland, who this time crashed through the floor.

From X-Man to Icon

While Wolverine had appeared before and survived a fight with the Hulk, he lacked a defining moment that cemented his status as an icon. The fight with the Hellfire Club provided that purpose. It demonstrated his formidable fighting prowess and offered a compelling story that propelled him beyond being just another team member. This event is widely credited with transforming Wolverine into the popular, money-making character he is today, giving him the narrative depth needed to rise from an ordinary hero to one of the best of the best.
