Huawei discloses progress on IP and innovation

The awards are intended to recognize inventions that could create a new series of products, become significant commercial features of current products, or generate significant value for the company and the industry.

Award-winning inventions range from an additional neural network that drastically reduces power consumption and circuit area to a revolutionary “optical iris” that provides a unique identifier for fiber optics. It is designed to help telecommunications companies manage their network resources, helping to reduce the time and costs associated with broadband deployment.

The announcement was made in the context of intellectual property rights, the protection and sharing of which Huawei says is essential to the technology ecosystem.

On the occasion, Dr. Song Liuping, also director of legal affairs and compliance, indicated that Huawei invested in 2021, 114.7 billion yuan (about 10,500 billion CFA francs) in research and development.

At least 20 billion Yuan (more than 1,800 billion CFA francs) per year in recent years have been invested in basic research and more than 10,000 patent applications filed annually for two years. He praised the resilience shown by Huawei in the face of the difficulties the Group has gone through in recent years. As of the end of 2021, Huawei held more than 110,000 active patents spread over more than 45,000 patent families, he noted.

For his part, Alan Fam, Chief Technology Officer: “Huawei intends to go beyond the 2 billion smartphones and connected objects that have used its Group’s inventions and do better than the 5e rank obtained in 2021 in terms of creation of new solutions“.

At the end of 2021, Huawei held over 110,000 active patents in over 45,000 patent families. It has more patents granted than any other Chinese company, has filed the most patent applications with the European Patent Office and ranks fifth in new patents granted in the United States. For five consecutive years, Huawei has ranked first in the world in patent cooperation treaty applications.
