Huawei’s earlier iterations, including the original Mate XT that launched in late 2024, relied on an accordion-style outward-folding configuration. That architecture eliminated the need for an external cover panel by letting sections of the flexible plastic OLED wrap around the chassis exterior. While it simplified the physical footprint, it left vulnerable display layers exposed to pocket debris, keys, and drops.

The Mate XT2 departs from that setup by adopting an inward-folding mechanism. By shielding the primary canvas inside the folded chassis, Huawei addresses long-standing durability concerns tied to soft polymer substrates.
Despite the extra mechanical protection, the hardware tradeoff is substantial. The Mate XT2 measures 12.3mm thick when folded and weighs 299 grams. However, securing this feature comes with steep hardware gates. The privacy display is not standard across the lineup. Under the chassis, the device runs on Huawei’s Kirin 9050 Pro processor, paired with HarmonyOS 7. Camera capabilities on the Mate XT2 include a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 50-megapixel telephoto lens offering 3.5x optical zoom, and a 40-megapixel ultrawide unit. Durability is rated at IP59 for dust and water resistance, representing an incremental improvement over typical foldable standards, though short of full IP68 certification. Stylus support is also baked into the software ecosystem for the large canvas.
Geographic availability remains a primary hurdle for prospective buyers. Following sweeping US sanctions that curtailed its international footprint, Huawei released the Mate XT2 exclusively in mainland China. Devices imported to Western markets face steep markups of 20% to 30%, alongside the complete absence of Google Mobile Services and standard international warranties.
