Hudson Alum’s Cannes Film Debut

Hudson High Alum Showcases Film at prestigious Cannes Festival

Cannes, France – June 13, 2025 – Hannah sutherland, a rising star in the world of documentary filmmaking, recently presented her short film and participated in a panel discussion at a special event held during the Cannes Film Festival.The event, “The First Student Films from the Educational Platform Les Glaneurs et la Glaneuse Agnés Varda,” highlighted the work of emerging filmmakers from across the globe.

Sutherland, who graduated from Hudson High School in 2022, showcased her project alongside a select group of film students chosen from a pool of international applicants. The initiative fostered a dynamic exchange of perspectives and creative interpretations. Participants where granted complete access to the footage from Agnès Varda’s celebrated documentary, The Gleaners and I, and challenged to develop their own artistic responses using the archival material.

This unique project encouraged students to explore Varda’s innovative editing techniques and apply them to original footage, resulting in a diverse collection of short films. Sutherland, who earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2024, is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree in documentary filmmaking in New York City.

The “Gleaners Project”: A Collaborative Effort

The “Gleaners Project” is a testament to collaborative support within the film industry. Funding and resources were provided by a consortium of prominent organizations, including INA, Netflix, Chanel, Ola Strøm and Yggdrasil, La Cinémathéque française, Institut Lumiére, the Margaret Herrick Library, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Criterion Collection, Janus Films, and mk2 Films.
