Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza: Escalating Violence and Urgent Supply Needs

The World Health Organization’s Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, Ahmed Al-Mandhari, described the current situation in Gaza as “extremely difficult,” while the successive escalation heralds a “certain humanitarian catastrophe.”

This comes as the Israeli army forces intend to begin a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip, which has been besieged for days, after calling on its residents to evacuate their homes and head towards the south, while the United Nations strongly called on Israel to cancel its orders, to avoid what could turn what is already a tragedy into a catastrophic situation. .

In the streets of Gaza City, hundreds of Palestinians came out carrying their belongings, in cars or on foot, trying to flee towards the south of the Strip, while most of them said that they did not know where to seek refuge.

In an exclusive interview with Sky News Arabia, Al-Mandhari spoke about the repercussions of the current situation by saying:

The wounded and dead are in the thousands, and the numbers of those displaced from their homes are countless, while basic supplies of food, water, fuel, and medicine are about to run out.

Hours ago, a plane carrying 78 cubic meters of health supplies landed at Al-Arish Airport in Egypt, and we hope that these supplies will be immediately delivered to the Gaza Strip. To meet critical health needs, once a humanitarian corridor is established to deliver aid through the Rafah crossing.

So far, the Egyptian side of the crossing is accessible, but the Israeli side remains closed.

Every hour that these supplies remain on the Egyptian side of the border, without opening the crossing from the Israeli side, more people die, especially the groups most at risk and those most affected by them, while the supplies that could save them are available less than 20 kilometers away.

Jordan warns of the repercussions of the humanitarian disaster on the region

We are talking about urgent supplies and needs to rescue the wounded, sick and traumatized, in addition to basic health supplies to meet the needs of 300,000 people, including pregnant women.

Failure to make these supplies accessible to those who need them and leave them to suffer or die is a moral defeat for the entire humanitarian community and must not be allowed to happen.

We reiterate our appeal to everyone to cease hostilities, protect civilians, and refrain from targeting health facilities, health workers and humanitarian caregivers.

Rafah crossing position
Earlier, a Sky News Arabia correspondent in Cairo reported that the Egyptian authorities refused to allow the entry of those holding American citizenship to the Rafah crossing, except within the framework of a more comprehensive agreement that alleviates the burden of human suffering in the Gaza Strip as the war enters its eighth day.

Egypt linked allowing the passage of those holding American citizenship to its territory to an agreement that includes the entry of aid into Gaza.

Subsequently, US President Joe Biden announced work with Israel, Egypt and Jordan to resume sending aid and mitigate the humanitarian effects of the Hamas attack.
