About 100 people had to be taken to hospital in Montreal and Laval due to possible carbon monoxide poisoning. We don’t fear for the life of any of them.
As of Saturday noon, precisely 102 people have been taken to hospital after showing symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning. In total, the Urgences-Santé services carried out 135 patient assessments for this reason in the two cities.
Because of the power outages in hundreds of thousands of homes, “people are trying to heat themselves with more or less appropriate means,” explains the intervention supervisor at Urgences-santé, Julie Gaulin.
“Barbecue type appliances” used indoors or a “generator placed too close to a door or window” can cause exposure to carbon monoxide.
Santé Montréal has published a list of poison prevention tips. In the event of symptoms, citizens are invited to contact 911 or the Quebec poison control centre.
On Friday, a man died of carbon monoxide poisoning after turning on a generator in his garage.
