Hungarian Foreign Minister: Europe’s abandonment of gas amounts to economic suicide

Hungary – Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó stressed the economic importance of gas for Hungary, considering that abandoning natural and liquefied gas would be tantamount to economic suicide for the European Union.

The Hungarian Foreign Minister indicated, in a press conference in Budapest on Tuesday, that his country does not plan to exclude blue fuel from the energy balance in the coming years.

Szijjarto said: “Natural gas will remain part of the country’s energy balance for many years to come. We reject the forced removal of gas from the energy mix. We consider the step to be economic suicide, and we do not want to jeopardize the competitiveness of the European Union economy.”

He added that Hungary does not intend to abandon gas contracts with reliable suppliers, pointing out that it recently began purchasing gas from Turkey, and plans to supply supply contracts with other suppliers.

The Hungarian Foreign Minister criticized the actions of the European Commission, which does not support the development of energy infrastructure in southeastern Europe under the pretext that natural gas will disappear from the energy balance within 15 years.

Earlier, the Hungarian Foreign Ministry stated that Budapest is working to diversify gas supplies, but in the short term it is impossible to replace Russian energy resources.

After the West imposed sanctions on Russia, the latter turned east and boosted energy supplies to Asian markets.
