Hungarian GP free practice – Russell crashes fastest in rain Perez
George Russell ran the fastest in the first free practice session of the rain-affected Hungarian GP, while Sergio Perez crashed his upgraded Red Bull car just two minutes after the start of the stage. Before the rain fell, the red flag interrupted FP1 for eight minutes.
At the beginning of FP1, Russell took the lead, followed by a group of drivers entering the track, but it was only about two minutes before anyone finished timing. Perez lost control and hit the tire wall at the 5th turn.
Eight minutes later, FP1 continued, and all the drivers entered the field one after another, but it started to rain soon. Once again, no one was able to complete the timing, and the Haas driver Kevin Magnussen, who was closest to running on dry tires, lost control at the last corner and fell short.
Although there were occasional drivers on the field, no one was able to complete the timing. It was not until about 20 minutes left in the stage that Valtteri Bottas of the Alfa Romeo team managed to run a score. Then everyone appeared on the stage one after another, but the stage was interrupted again by the red flag when Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz lost control and rubbed against the wall, and it resumed again with about 11 minutes left.
A total of 13 drivers completed the timing in FP1. In the last two minutes, Russell competed with McLaren’s Oscar Piastri for the top spot. The former won with the fastest time of 1 minute 38.795 seconds, leading the latter by 0.359 seconds. Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso took third and fifth respectively, sandwiching another McLaren driver, Lando Norris.
Bottas ran fifth in the race, teammate Zhou Guanyu grabbed seventh, Alfa Romeo interspersed with Charles Leclerc of Ferrari, Logan Sargeant of Williams ranked ninth, and Nico Hulkenberg took tenth for the Haas team.
