Hungarian GP: Russell takes pole ahead of Ferrari

Sensation during qualifying for the Hungarian GP in Budapest. The Englishman George Russell (Mercedes) signed the first pole position of his career by beating the Ferraris.

Russell clocked 1:17.377 on his second try in Q3. This allowed him to be ahead of Spaniard Carlos Sainz by 0”044 and Monegasque Charles Leclerc by 0”190. This pole is the first for Mercedes in 2022.

Lando Norris (McLaren-Mercedes) set the 4th fastest time ahead of the Alpine-Renault of Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso and the Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton. This one had to interrupt his second run after an error.

Verstappen only 10th

The session went wrong for the Red Bulls. Sergio Pérez (11th) was taken out in Q2, while Max Verstappen, victim of a loss of power in Q3, could not do better than 10th.

The composition of the grid suggests an exciting race on Sunday. The Alfa Romeo-Ferrari will start in 8th position with Valtteri Bottas and in 12th with Guanyu Zhou.
