(Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix 2023 – schedule for the penultimate race of the season at the Hungaroring) Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team: “This weekend sees the first attempt at an ‘alternative tire allocation’. The Hungarian Grand Prix weekend is usually one of the hottest of the year, with an average air temperature of 25°C and a maximum temperature of 33°C”. What else Mercedes says about the penultimate race, here in Speed Magazine..

Mercedes F1 Team Principal Toto Wolff on the Formula 1 race in Hungary

“We’re looking forward to tackling another double-header ahead of Hungary before the summer break. The first half of the year was up and down, but we can take some positive things with us.

In Silverstone we scored more points than our closest competitors. We worked well on race day. We were able to get on the podium and extend our lead as second in the world championship. However, the balance of power fluctuates almost every weekend. We need to keep finding more performance if we want to close the gap at the front and fight for wins.

Several teams have made great strides recently. That brought some into the fray with us, McLaren in particular. That was impressive and encourages us that we too can continue to improve. We look forward to this challenge and will take our own steps when the time comes.

The Hungaroring is a very different track from Silverstone. It will be interesting to see how our latest upgrades perform in the long, slow corners. We have good memories of Hungary from last year when George [Russell] clinched its first pole position in Formula 1 and the team was on the podium with both drivers. This race is also ten years since Lewis [Hamilton] got his first win with us – so it’s a track full of good memories.

Hopefully we can put in a strong performance this time too. We want to build on the positive momentum from Silverstone and take on our rivals.”

Facts & Figures about the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix

This weekend sees the first attempt at an ‘alternative tire allocation’ The Hungarian Grand Prix weekend is usually one of the hottest of the year, with an average air temperature of 25°C and a maximum of 33°C. The track temperatures are correspondingly high, averaging 36°C and rising to a maximum of just over 50°C. The high number of braking events – six braking events on one lap – in connection with the high outside temperatures and the lack of long straights put a particularly heavy strain on the brakes on this circuit. The low average speed at the Hungaroring also limits airflow, making brake cooling even more of a challenge. The track has 14 corners, six left-handers and eight right-handers. Many of these are arranged in quick succession one on top of the other. This means that a well-balanced car that handles changes of direction well is important for a fast lap time. The Hungaroring has one of the lowest top speeds of the season at just over 310 km/h. This is perhaps no surprise given that over the course of a fast lap the cars spend just over 10 seconds on a straight and spend the rest of the time cornering. These route characteristics are also reflected in the full-throttle rate, which at just 60% is one of the lowest values of the year. Despite a relatively short start/finish straight, the distance from pole position to the braking zone before turn 1 is 444 meters on the longer side compared to other racetracks we have visited. In view of the many slow corners, good traction is important at the Hungaroring. Therefore, the rear tires are heavily used on this route. Last year, in Hungary, George clinched his first Formula 1 pole position. His lap time of 1:17.377 put him on pole for the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix. The team followed up with a double podium finish in the race, with Lewis second and George third. With eight wins, Lewis is the most successful driver in the history of the Hungarian Grand Prix. The next successful pilot is Michael Schumacher with four victories.
