Despite protests, Hungary’s right-wing nationalist government is sticking to the controversial large-scale Neusiedler Lake project in Fertörakos and has issued an environmental permit for its realization for the third time. A court in the western Hungarian city of Györ had “collected” the two previous permits for environmental reasons, the online portal “SzMo.hu” reported on Tuesday.

Nevertheless, the government launched a new attempt to realize the tourism investment, which critics say would cause serious environmental damage. A marina, a hotel, parking spaces and 26 apartment buildings are to be built on the western bank, which is under Natura 2000 protection.

The Hungarian association “Friends of Lake Neusiedl” has contested the permit, so the matter will be referred to the Györ court once more. The Austrian federal government and the state government of Burgenland repeatedly criticized the large-scale project from the outset.
