It is getting old, but it supplies almost half of the electricity that Hungary uses: the Paks nuclear power plant. This makes it a high priority for the Hungarian government – even though neighboring Austria, among others, has repeatedly expressed security concerns. Last but not least, there is an active tectonic fault running beneath the site. This applies to the four old units as well as to two new planned Paks II reactors. They are intended to replace the power plant from the 1980s.
