“Just want to be a girl”

With roles in Euphoria and last year’s Hunger Games-film in the bag, Schafer goes from strength to strength in his career. This means she can turn down roles that don’t interest her – which, according to the actress, includes portraying transgender people:

“I worked so hard to get here, past the really hard parts of my transition, and now I just want to be a girl and finally move on,” she says.

Schafer says she has made conscious choices to take her career in a new direction:

“It has been very intentional. I’ve been offered tons of trans roles, and I just don’t want to do it. I don’t want to talk regarding it,” she says and continues:

“I know I’m one of the most famous transgender people in the media right now, and I feel a responsibility, and maybe a little guilt, to not be more of a spokesperson. But ultimately, I think the fact that I don’t make it a focus of what I do will allow me to go further. And going further and doing cool things, I think, is much more useful from the point of view of the ‘movement’ than talking regarding it all the time.”
