Hurricane Lala Flash Floods Sweep Away Vehicles and Homes in Hawaii

Former Hurricane Lala lashed Hawaii with torrential downpours and powerful surf, triggering severe flash flooding that swept vehicles away, washed homes off their foundations, and left more than 116,000 customers without power. The storm skirted the Big Island as a hurricane over the weekend before weakening into a tropical storm as it tracked west, according to updates from the National Hurricane Center.

With parts of Maui County recording up to 48 inches of rain, state infrastructure has faced strain, prompting widespread closures and emergency rescues.

Widespread Flooding and Big Island Destruction

The system’s eyewall hammered the southern portion of the Big Island, bringing destructive winds and relentless rain that swelled waterways and battered the coast with powerful waves. Hawaii County Mayor Kimo Alameda shared on social media that an intensive search-and-rescue mission involving Civil Defense, the National Guard, and the Coast Guard was launched after flash floods swept occupied homes off their foundations in the coastal communities of Naʻalehu and Waiʻohinū. Rescuers successfully pulled an elderly woman from one of the washed-away residences.

Downed trees and power lines littered roadways, while rising water levels threatened critical infrastructure. According to utility tracking data from PowerOutage.us, over 116,000 homes and businesses lost electricity across the state early Monday. In response to the widespread hazards, Hawaii Governor Josh Green noted that at least three hospitals were operating on generator power, while damaged roads and compromised small bridges hindered access to remote areas.

Emergency Response and Statewide Disruptions

State officials took precautionary steps ahead of the storm’s worst impacts. All state and county offices, public charter schools, Department of Education institutions, and court systems were closed on Monday. Honolulu EMS transported more than 200 people to hospitals, while approximately 240 Hawaii National Guard members deployed to bolster local emergency services.

Transportation networks also absorbed significant disruptions. Hawaiian Airlines reported 52 flight cancellations statewide on Sunday following roughly 190 cancellations or pauses the previous day, though commercial airports remained operational by Sunday night. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard reopened all of the state’s commercial ports late Sunday evening to resume vessel traffic.

Looking Ahead as the System Moves West

While the storm continues to track westward away from the islands, meteorologists note it could reorganize over the open waters of the Pacific and potentially regain hurricane strength by Wednesday. Local emergency management agencies continue to urge residents to remain cautious as cleanup operations begin across the affected islands.
