Hurricane Lidia Reaches Category 4 Strength and Set to Make Landfall in Mexico

(CNN Spanish) — Hurricane Lidia, moving through the eastern Pacific, is strengthening at full speed and reached Category 4 strength with sustained winds of 200 km/h, according to the US National Hurricane Center. Forecasts indicate that it will make landfall in Mexico during the next few hours.

The speed of Lidia’s winds has increased 112 km/h in the last 24 hours.

For its part, the National Meteorological Service (SMN) of Mexico reported that its center is located approximately 130 km southwest of Cabo Corrientes and 175 km southwest of Puerto Vallarta, both towns in Jalisco. “It has maximum sustained winds of 220 km/h gusts of 260 km/h and movement towards the east-northeast at 26 km/h.”

Hurricane Lidia is forecast to make landfall this Tuesday night somewhere on the coast between Jalisco and Nayarit, according to the SMN.

Previously, the entity detailed that “if it maintains its displacement and trajectory, the center of Lidia is expected to enter land between 6:00 pm and 9:00 pm local time (8:00 pm and 11:00 pm, Miami), between Jalisco and Nayarit,” the entity indicated.

For its part, the National Hurricane Center noted that “Lidia will likely have the strength of a major hurricane or when it reaches the coast.”

Once the storm makes landfall, it is expected to weaken quickly.

The affected areas

The SMN warned that Lidia will leave rains greater than 25 cm in Jalisco, while Colima, Michoacán, Nayarit and western Guerrero will register rainfall between 15 and 25 cm. For their part, Durango and Sinaloa may have accumulated 7.5 to 15 cm.

He also pointed out that precipitation could include electrical discharges and generate landslides, as well as increases in the levels of rivers and streams and overflows.

“Winds with gusts of 200 to 220 km/h and waves of 7 to 9 meters (m) high are expected on the coasts of Jalisco and Nayarit; 160 to 180 km/h and waves of 5 to 7 m high on the coasts of Sinaloa ; from 130 to 150 km/h with waves of 4 to 6 m on the coasts of Colima and Michoacán; from 70 to 90 km/h and waves of 2 to 4 m high on the coasts of Baja California Sur and Guerrero, as well as possible waterspouts marinas on the coasts of the mentioned states, completed the report.
