A few days ago, after the multiple tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Vladimir Putin decided to launch his first military attack against the neighboring country, proceeding in the main cities of the country. At that time the life of many Ukrainians and people of other nationalities who had a life there changed completely. In the case of Colombians, some have decided to stay in the European country, others have left for the borders; and in the particular case of Héctor Jiménez Bravo, he wants to quickly return to the country that is currently facing one of the biggest conflicts in the world to look for his family.
Jiménez Bravo arrived in Colombia on February 24, the same day that the bombings, the fissiles and the Russian weapons began to destroy Ukraine, violating the international laws of sovereignty and territorial autonomy.
“As soon as I arrived in Colombia, the next morning, I couldn’t believe that Putin attacked a sovereign country. I haven’t slept for 72 hours because he worries about what happens to my family and friends.”the Colombian pointed out to Semana Magazine.
Héctor, who had been permanently accentuated in Ukraine, because he was one of the most recognized chefs and had great job offers such as being one of the Master Chef juries in the country, added that the only thing he wants is to return regardless it’s your turn to join the army.
“I consider myself Ukrainian, because they gave me permanence. I want to try to go back because Ukraine became my home, I don’t care if I have to put on an army jacket and I know what the Ukrainians are fighting for, they are fighting for a life in peace.” the chef commented.
In the space with the Colombian media, Héctor Jiménez questioned the actions of the Russian government and pointed out that everything is due to the need that Vladimir Putin has for power as a pro-Russian leader as before the demonstrations that the country experienced in 2014.
“I don’t understand why (Putin) has to worry about his neighborhood. If I’m fine at home, why should the neighbor worry? He has the complex that they are going to attack him, that someone is going to attack the Russians. Since 2014 that we have a democratic government we do not think about Russia. They think that if Ukraine is in NATO we will have the power to attack Russia.”, told Semana and added that he defends Ukraine, because he has always received very good treatment and was received in a different way, contrary to what happened to him when he lived for a time in Saint Petersburg, Russia; where he had to put up with some xenophobic attacks because of his skin color.
For now, the Colombian government has ratified its support for Colombians who need help to return to the country. To this end, healthcare points were established in Poland, Hungary and Slovakia. So far, 188 Colombians have been registered with their respective families, of which 59 are reported outside the attacked territory.
For its part, the government extended its humanitarian aid and is contributing to the refugee camps in Poland, where they have indicated that they will receive between one million and four million people displaced by the conflict.
