The Junge Uni 2023 at the IMC Krems was themed “Stay Curious”

Krems (OTS) – 250 children and young people aged 10 to 13 were able to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of science and research for a week at the Young University at IMC Krems. This took place for the 16th time from July 10th to 14th at the IMC Krems campus. At the end of the week, the young academics now know what it’s like to get a taste of university life, to learn from real professors and to research and experiment with them.

“I vow” and graduation hat toss

Like the “big ones”, the young students completed their studies with a graduation on Friday, July 14, 2023, in the event hall of the IMC Krems. The most important program points were the solemn promise, introduced with the Latin formula “Spondeo”, to “remain curious throughout life and always show an interest in science and research” and the tossing of the graduation hat. Another highlight was the video of the Junge Uni, which summarized the experiences of the last few days. Mag. Dr. LL.M.(Com) Udo Brändle, Managing Director of the IMC Krems, Prof.(FH) Mag. Martin Waiguny, Academic Director of IMC Krems, lecturers and workshop leaders as well as numerous guests from business, politics and science. Thanks to the many supporters and sponsors, the costs of the Junge Uni for the parents are only nine euros per child, while at the same time a varied program of the highest quality is offered.

„Stay Curious“

The participants of the Junge Uni were able to experience the fascination of learning and knowledge in the 40 lectures and 54 workshops. This year the young university had the motto “Stay Curious”. “We decided on the motto “Stay Curious” this year because it is particularly important to us to make children curious regarding science and research,” explains project manager Sabine Steinkellner, MA. In addition, amazing experiments and exciting projects got the young students interested in everyday university life. A pool of interesting workshops awaited them, such as “Backstage in the hospital”, “From Julius Caesar to Bitcoin”, “Understanding mechatronics” or “Physics is “cool” – experiments with dry ice”.

School bag campaign

This year, used school bags were once once more donated in cooperation with the Stepic CEE Charity Organization powered by RBI Group. The children of the Young University might bring these to IMC Krems and hand them in. The school bags are filled by the METRO company and then donated to Romanian children and children who have fled from the Ukraine.

UNESCO-awarded pioneering project

The Junge Uni was founded by the IMC Krems in 2006 as the first youth university in Lower Austria and has been held successfully every year since then. So far, more than 2,500 young students have been inspired by subjects such as mathematics, computer science, natural sciences, technology, management, biotechnology, IT and languages. In 2008, the project was recognized by UNESCO as an Austrian Decade Project for Sustainability and is now part of a network with over 150 children’s and youth universities worldwide.
