According to the specialized media Preferente, Iberia reinforced its leading position in the US market last year, reaching close to 1.9 million passengers transported to and from Spain (including Level). This figure represented a growth of 29% compared to 2019, the year before the pandemic, according to AENA data.
The Spanish company’s market share also increased significantly, going from 29.4% in 2019 to 40.6% in 2023. This expansion placed Iberia in a dominant position, widening the difference with its main competitors.
American Airlines, which occupies second position, transported 1.2 million travelers in 2023, 8.4% less than in 2019. The difference between Iberia and American has widened considerably, much in favor of the Iberian company.

The same thing happens with United Airlines, which completes the podium with 612,802 users, 34% more than four years before. They are followed by Delta Air Lines with 568,362 users (2.4% less than in 2019) and Air Europa with 317,828 (3.2% above the pre-pandemic year). Overall, air traffic between Spain and the United States in 2023 experienced a decrease of 6.6% (330,325 fewer passengers than before the pandemic) compared to 2019. Norwegian’s exit from the market, which focused on short-term flights and a half radius, partly explained this drop in American tourists visiting Spain.
Iberia, founded in 1927, is the Spanish flag airline and one of the oldest in the world. Headquartered in Madrid, it operates flights to more than 125 destinations, including a wide network of routes in Europe, the United States, Latin America and Africa.
