This is the second time that Ibrahim Akhlal has fled, after his escape from the Brussels prison of Saint-Gilles in March 2020. According to the federal police, he has already been sentenced to a total of 21 years in prison in Belgium for several robberies. Since last year, he has also officially been of interest to Dutch justice because he is suspected of having participated in a spectacular robbery of gold and precious metals in Amsterdam in May 2021. In March 2022, at the request of the Dutch authorities, the Belgian police had launched a wanted notice distributed internationally targeting this offender from Brussels. Ibrahim Akhlal, on the run, was arrested in December 2022 in Conakry by the Guinean judicial police. He managed to escape Tuesday from the central house of the Guinean capital where he had been placed not in a cell but in “the office of the chief doctor of the prison”, according to the Guinean Minister of Justice Alphonse Charles Wright. On state television, the minister denounced the “flagrant complicity” in this escape of several prison officials, guards and nurses. A total of six men have been suspended from duty.
