Ibri Quarry Accident: Search Closed | Ibri Quarry Accident: Search stopped

Muscat: The body of the last person missing in an accident at a private marble factory in Ibri in Dahira Governorate has been found. The death toll from the crash has risen to 14, the Civil Defense and Ambulance Authority said in a statement.

The search was carried out with the help of state-of-the-art machinery. The search was hampered by a rock fall in the early stages of the rescue operation. In the days that followed, however, rescue efforts intensified.

The quake struck at around 12 midnight on Saturday in the Al-Ard area of Ibri province. Six people were killed in the accident. The bodies of eight people were found during a rescue operation in the following days.

Two bodies were found on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and one each on Thursday and Saturday. There are unofficial reports that Indians were also among the dead. The first layer of marble, three meters thick and 200 meters high, collapsed.

The workers were Indian and Pakistani at the time of the accident. Locals and industry experts have blamed such incidents on contract companies neglecting workplace safety.
